Viva Patagonia extension
5 days

SANTIAGO – PUNTA ARENAS – PUERTO NATALES – BALMACEDA & SERRANO GLACIERS – TORRES DEL PAINE – LAKE & GLACIER GREY – MAGELLANic PENGUINS – MAGDALENA ISLAND

PRESENTATION

This trip cannot be done alone. It exists as an extension of the tour Under the Atacama Sky

Chile is characterized by the extraordinary richness of its contrasts. After your experience in the Atacama Desert, known as the driest on the planet, we invite you to discover other great spaces and to crown the change of scenery by visiting an equally fascinating region located at the end of the world, Patagonia.

Its grandiose and (still) wild nature, marked by mountains, glaciers, fjords, islands, rivers, lakes, forests as well as a singular light, will be within reach of your eyes in the program that follows.

DAY BY DAY

Once the Under the Atacama Sky circuit is finished at Santiago airport, check in for the Santiago – Punta Arenas flight, snack at our leisure and boarding.
Arrival in Punta Arenas in the early evening and transfer to our hotel.

Pretty port city of 130,000 inhabitants, located on the Strait of Magellan and close to the southern tip of Chilean Patagonia, Punta Arenas connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans and serves as a base for excursions in the surrounding nature and Antarctica. The region makes its living from sheep farming (at the cost of the genocide of native Indians at the end of the 19th century…), fishing, mining and tourism.

Before taking our regular bus to Puerto Natales at the bus station (departure at 10 am), we recommend a short one-hour walk in the early morning through the Plaza de Armas (main square), surrounded by a few European-style mansions that have become historical. Five streets away by the ˝Avenida Colón˝, is the Cerro La Cruz  (hill) and its viewpoint from where we can admire a panoramic view of the city and the Strait of Magellan.
Return to the hotel at 9:30 am and taxi to the nearby bus station where we will take the 10 am bus to Puerto Natales (3h15m and 155 miles trip) crossing the Patagonian steppe where we can see some of the local fauna.
Arrival in Puerto Natales, Taxi to the hotel, check-in and lunch on our own.

Capital of the province of Ultima Esperanza, founded in 1911 and located on the edge of the Señoret canal, facing the Patagonian Andes, Puerto Natales (19,000 inhabitants) is at the center of the region’s intense livestock activity. In summer, it turns into the tourist capital of Chilean Patagonia, due to the proximity of Torres del Paine National Park.

For meals, there are good tables like the ˝Aldea˝, ˝The Singular˝ (more chic), ˝Cangrejo rojo˝, ˝Ultima Esperanza˝, also known as ˝Donde (at) Marín’s˝, fish, lobster, frequented by the local people, “Cafe kaikén”…

In the afternoon, our driver will pick us up to visit the Cueva del Milodón, a complex of three caves where were found in 1895 very well preserved remains of a herbivorous mammal that lived there some 12,000 years old. The paleontological interest of this Natural Monument means that it has become a must-see point for many travelers. From this place, it is possible to appreciate the Fiord Ultima Esperanza (of the last hope), a salt water channel that originates from the Pacific ocean and travels to the mountains of the Andes Cordillera.

Return to the hotel around 5:30 pm. Dinner at our own.

Total miles traveled: 370

7:45 am : departure from the hotel to go to the nearby dock.
8 am : Beginning of a spectacular cruise:

During the trip on the ˝Ultima Esperanza˝ fjord to the Bernardo O’higgins National Park – the largest in Chile – it will be possible to appreciate a setting made up of mountains, farms, fresh waterfalls, sea lions that frolics on the rocks, colonies of cormorants, (sometimes condors), and the Balmaceda glacier. In Puerto Toro, we will disembark for a short walk in the woods to approach the Serrano Glacier which will make an appearance difficult to forget. At around 1 pm, we will take the way back to Puerto Natales and on the way we will be able to taste the classic whiskey with thousand-year-old ice cubes taken from the glacier. We will disembark again, this time for a Patagonian lunch at a beautiful farm in the area, Estancia Turística Perales: meat and vegetable soup, magellan lamb barbecue, plain potatoes, salad, dessert, wine or soft drink, or a vegetarian alternative.

Return to Puerto Natales around 5 pm.

Our private service to Torres del Paine park will pick us up from the hotel at 6 am.
Journey of approximately 50 miles to the Lago Grey hotel and check in for the navigation of Gray lake one hour before departure.
This crossing of about 2h45 will allow us to appreciate a landscape revealing icebergs, seracs, mountains, vegetation and, once arrived at the foot of the Grey Glacier, we will be able to see closely all the beauty of the high ice wall of more than 65 ft, as well as to taste a traditional pisco sour with thousand-year-old ice cubes.

An on-board guide comments on the peculiarities that characterize the site.
Back at the dock, we will rejoin our driver and walk through a part of the park visiting the Salto Grande, where we can have a box lunch while admiring the lake Lago Pehoé, the Río Grande, the magnificent panoramas of Paine Grande mountain, Cuernos del Paine, el Frances glacier and Paine Chico mountain.
Return to Puerto Natales at 6 pm. Brief stopover at our hotel to collect our belongings and departure around 7 pm to return to Punta Arenas in a private transfer.
Arrival at our hotel around 10 pm and dinner at our own.

Total miles traveled: 242

To accomplish the trip, we offer a navigation of about 45 min along magnificent seaside landscapes in the Strait of Magellan to the Monumento Natural Los Pinguinos at Magdalena and Marta islands. Walk through a 2600 feet path that meanders between burrows dug in the ground to admire thousands of penguins in their natural habitat, accompanied – among others – by sea lions, seals, hundreds of cormorants, Australian gulls, Antarctic pigeons, dolphins until reaching the island lighthouse, commissioned in 1902 from where we will enjoy a spectacular view of the Strait of Magellan.

Tour in English & Spanish. Departure from the hotel at 7 am to go to the meeting point in Muelle (pier) Prat.
Return to the hotel at around noon.

Lunch on our own and transfer to the airport for our flight back to Santiago in the middle of the afternoon or early evening depending on flight availability.
Arrival in Santiago in the early evening (or around 11 pm) and shuttle to our hotel next to the airport. (The next day, we can take the hotel-airport shuttle at a time that suits us to catch our flight home)

* The excursion to Magdalena Island is subject to favorable weather conditions. If the departure was canceled, we will offer you alternatives or refund it. Not accessible to people with reduced mobility and not recommended for pregnant women.

GENERAL CONDITIONS & LIMITS OF RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ORGANIZER

Once the tour has started, Planeta Chile, acting as organizer, is not responsible for eventual delays and modifications in the tour due to conditions that may impede the proper development of the trip, such as (this list is not exhaustive nor limiting. All of these reasons constitute conditions beyond our control):

  • Decisions of local authorities / carriers due to pandemics, strikes, etc.
  • Natural disasters: floods, earthquakes, tidal waves, storms, landslides, bad weather conditions, etc.
  • Severe political conditions (wars, revolutions, states of siege, coups, etc.)
  • Accidents and illness of a passenger, etc.

In the context of these conditions, the organizer will be able to modify the orientation / course of the programs and certain stages and propose suitable substitutes. Said substitutes -which, as far as possible may be offered free of charge- will be proposed to try to avoid one or more of the aforementioned inconveniences, and / or to satisfy the wishes unanimously expressed by travelers, to the extent that the organizational requirements and the budget allow it.

Modifications, delays or cancellations of air and land transport of any kind and other conditions mentioned above that lead to an extension or limitation of the trip do not give rise to any refund on our part. These, being beyond our control, cannot generate any compensation, even in cases where they would cause additional costs for the traveler, who would then assume the cost alone.

If during the trip it turns out that a significant part of the services covered by the contract could not be performed, Planeta Chile will evaluate the difference between the promised services and the services actually delivered and will compensate the traveler for the amount corresponding to that difference.

The assistance and accident insurance contract is mandatory. We recommend our clients to take out trip cancellation insurance to avoid economic losses in case of problems.
